I will die on my grave saying that Citarella is the best supermarket in the area. A few reasons why I believe this: 1. Variety For a smaller supermarket, they have just about everything you would need. I'm always so pleasantly surprised when they have the niche pumpkin or specific breed of orange I need for my recipes. I'm almost shocked that other supermarkets contain SO much, yet nothing. I hope others can follow Citarellas sourcing strategy because it is VERY good. 2. Fresh Produce, Meat, and Seafood Firstly, the fruits here are surprisingly delicious. Every time I've picked up any fruit, I'm always pleasantly amazed. The meat and seafood is also the freshest I've seen. I know that there have been some off days when the seafood hasn't been as fresh, but overall I've still had a lot more consistency here than at nearby stores. Yes, the salmon at Whole foods is 7.99 a pound but why is it gray? 3. Price People who say Citarella is pricey are not wrong. However, if you stray away from the 40$ artisanal chips and the made-to-order food I find that Citarella is honestly very fairly priced. I often run around the neighborhood to compare prices and let me tell you, Citarella is often the cheapest for staple items like lemons or eggs. They do lack in items like vanilla extract (I believe Citarella only carries one brand and it's 16.99 which ok yes i agree that is insane). I'm not saying they have trader joe deals, but this place is often cheaper than Whole Foods, Gristedes, and Morton Williams for your basic items. Now, a few improvements: 1. could stock more asian items and also star anise (the one staple i believe does not exist at Citarella) 2. could have smaller cheese servings so I don't have to pay 1lb of parmesan every time for my single serve pasta dish 3. could have normal priced flour Otherwise, this place is the best !

Citarella is an upper east side staple and for good reason. When needing gourmet items its a good spot. Consistently reliable quality, fresh seafood, their prepped meals are good, welcoming staff which makes for a fun experience. High quality fresh fruits and artisan cheeses. Quite pricey but to be expected for the area and quality, Got several items for a quick tasting board, their white sturgeon caviar is great quality! The store is well stocked and kept clean! Will revisit again!

This place is very dependable, always stocked and the items are fresh and the shelves are organized. I swear 3rd ave in general is a wanna be Madison lol but I love to come here for the baguettes. They are so tasty. Some of the staff are nice some are nonchalant I get it. The decor is great though. I love their branding.

I wish Citarella had some competition because there would be more places like this around New York - but "alas," it's either Third Avenue or Broadway (I never go to their Sith Avenue location)... and they're in a class by themselves. Joe carries the best: from vegetables to meat and seafood. Try the Russian tea cookies. I could complain about the prices but prices are high everywhere. And for a bit more $$$ than D'Agostino's you get the best there is. My recommendation is to go with your recipe ingredient list and don't veer too far afield or you'll be tempted to squander your children's college tuition.

Just a quick shout-out to Store Manager, Vladimir. Thank you, Vlad, for going out of your way to fulfill my request--as well as for keeping an eye out on store operations, making sure that displays look beautiful and everything is running smoothly! (I was looking for something missing from the produce shelves, and Vladimir pointed out that a delivery truck had just arrived, and if I waited a few minutes, he would actually check the truck to see if it had my item...He found it on board the truck, and I left the store very happy! That's service--and with a smile no less!) Even though this is only supposed to be a shout-out to Vlad, since I'm writing this, I might as well mention my biggest gripe with the store: The prepared foods section. It truly needs a reworking. Nothing ever looks appetizing. Management should take a look at Butterfield's, among others, to make note of their prepared foods offerings, presentation, and service. I'll leave it at that....

Great place for fresh seafood, friendly staff that will help you clean and cut your fish as wanted and the best prices in the area. Cannot be happy enough to have such amazing store at walking distance.
